On the anniversary of 9/11, re-examining Terrorism for profit
Two attacks linked to the Islamic State, two different continents, and two unsuccessful terrorists. As we approach the anniversary of 9/11, it is clear terrorism is still a threat, but when one examines the details of current terrorist activity, the changes I seek to highlight in my latest book, Terror for Profit, appear more straightforward.
The endeavors of a Pakistani individual to enter the United States of America to attack Jewish targets while using a people trafficker to enter the country, and of an Albanian to attack police officers in Germany while crying Allahu Akbar—only to find himself locked in a police station and harming no one—both run as consistent with the theme of ‘degradation’ I outline in Terror for Profit.
The perpetrators of these recent attacks appear to be fellow travelers of Yusuf Sarwar and Mohammed Ahmed (whom I describe in the book as purchasers of Islam for Dummies en route to Jihad); with such attackers, we have individuals who are far removed from the evil-but-capable 9/11 plot members. Neither their operational skills nor their understanding of their cause is well-developed. The contact with organized crime in the form of people trafficking fits well with other examples I highlight in the book.
In Chapter Seven, I track the course of the downward trajectory of terrorism’s fourth ‘Religious Wave’ espoused by David Rapoport, which nothing of our recent attackers appears to be part of. In this chapter, I discuss the individualized terrorist wave which seems to be upon us, where individuals seek after their own selfish profit (hence, the title of my book, Terror for Profit).
I outline why tagging someone shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ as being a religious terrorist may, in fact, be a mischaracterization and, indeed, when analyzed, have little to do with Islam whatsoever.
The tempo of attacks is rising. Only through reassessing the threat we face, as I suggest in the book, can we properly understand and then counter these modern terrorists.
